Request creation of a VPS project
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Project Name: npsdebugserv

Wikitech Usernames of requestors: NullPointer

Purpose: I would like to use this project to test out MW extensions, debug huggle, and more.

Brief description: Root access, a full installation of MediaWiki 1.33.

How soon you are hoping this can be fulfilled: as soon as possible.

Additional Comments: Please tell me how to log in once this is created.

Event Timeline

Right now this sounds like a "laptop in the cloud" project. On https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Cloud_VPS_project#Reviews_of_Cloud_VPS_Project_requests we say this about this type of project:

"Laptop in the cloud" projects for a single individual to use as a personal development machine
Projects for use by single individuals raise a problem of fairness and inclusivity. The Cloud VPS environment does not have the resources to accommodate these projects. The Hardware donation program or another Wikimedia grant program may provide an alternative for some individuals.

@bd808 This is not a laptop in the cloud. Although I stopped developing Huggle, I am developing Kiwix and MW extensions, and I need a VPS to test out.

@NullPointer: Who else would use this instance, and which specific code project scope would this instance have?

MW extensions and PYwikibot. Currently, only I will use this instance, but others may use this in the future.

Brief description: Root access, a full installation of MediaWiki 1.33.

MediaWiki 1.33 has been EOL since the end of June 2020 - https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-announce/2020-June/000253.html

MW extensions and PYwikibot. Currently, only I will use this instance, but others may use this in the future.

Have you asked others already? :) I'm asking this as we generally do not grant Cloud VPS projects for [current] single user development use && catch-all multiple project development in the same instance - in my understanding, what you describe is the definition of "laptop in the cloud".
Cloud-VPS virtual machines are a constrained resource, and we do not have the ability to provide a VM for any and all Wikimedia technical contributors for personal use. See https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Cloud_VPS_project#Guidelines_for_project_requests for more information.

@NullPointer: Also, could you please link to a Huggle commit by you in its codebase and/or existing Wikimedia development activity by yours? Thanks a lot!

@NullPointer: Which does not answer my question. My question was: Could you please link to a Huggle commit by you in its codebase and/or existing Wikimedia development activity by yours?
