The European Union provide funding for networking projects called COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). As an affiliate we can join these competitive projects either during the initial application, or later on when new partners are invited. The grants cover the costs for the events and travel, but not staff time.

The COST networks are believed to be valuable to join other EU calls for funding and to share information about free knowledge and the Wikimedia projects to a large number of European, and international, players.
