Story idea for Blog: GitLab consultation
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Please provide the following information.

  • Provide a short summary of your proposed post for the Wikimedia Technical Blog:

There is currently a consultation on the subject of whether or not to use GitLab vs Gerrit for code review. This consultation is open to participation from anyone involved in the Wikimedia technical space. The post would give a short background of the consultation and ask for participation. The hope is that this post will raise awareness of the consultation process to help arrive at an equitable outcome for the entire technical community.

This almost falls into "Announcement of a change related to technology". Closer to "We might make a change related to technology". Although it's also close to, "Tech community events and outreach programs".

  • What audience or audiences do you think your post is appropriate for:

Folks with opinions about code review in Wikimedia technical spaces from any perspective: volunteer, employee (of WMF, WMDE, etc.), 3rd party extension developer, independent project developer.

  • Will you need assistance with writing your blog post?

No

  • Does your post need to be published by a certain date?

Before the end of the GitLab consultation period 2020-09-30

  • Do you have any other questions or comments?

Once your request is received, a technical blog admin will review it and reach out to you through Phabricator.

@thcipriani Thank you! I moved this into a Google Doc so that we can do some edits together. I will take a pass at it and add some comments/edits.

@thcipriani I made some initial edits and comments on this. Can you take a look and accept/decline or make the additions? After, I want to go through one more time and tweak the voice a little bit. So far so good though!

I think we've completed that round of edits now. What's the next step? :)

I'll do a final round based on the edits, and we should be good to publish Monday 21 Sept 2020 :-)

Did a quick edit. Looks good. Moving to blog for formatting and planning to publish Monday 21 Sept 2020

@thcipriani do you have any thoughts about an image you would like to include for the featured image?

Here is some info about picking an image: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_technical_blog_editorial_guidelines#Images_used_in_your_post

I don't have any photo in mind. I can browse quality/featured photos on commons, but if you have suggestions I'm open :)

Couple of photos appeal to me:

I dug a bit into https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Featured_pictures/People and there are a lot of amazing photos, particularly I like the idea of people working or talking, but I didn't see anything that quite fit.

Let's go with the fox! It looks really cool

One quick thing:
