From the talk page: It would be useful for events, or anything with a closing date, for example, if the URL parameters could ensure only events "in the future" are displayed.

Thinking again - it might be useful to have "today" / "this week" / "this month" too - though for my purposes I think "past" and "future" would be sufficient!
