Enable Reply Tool to use context-specific indentation syntax
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

We first noticed this request at ja.wiki [i] via ネイ's very helpful comment at mw.org [ii].

This task is about making it so the indentation syntax the Reply Tool outputs can be adjusted depending on the page it is being used.

Background

T252708 makes it so the Reply Tool uses the same indentation syntax, :, regardless of the wiki and page it is being used. T259864 would make it so wikis could decide, at a project-level, what syntax the Reply Tool uses to indent the comments people post with it.

This task is about taking T259864 a step further, by making it possible to more granularly decide (e.g. on a per page basis) what syntax the Reply Tool uses to indent comments people post with it.

ネイ surfaced ja.wiki's need for this functionality at mw.org where they shared the following:

  • w:ja:H:TP (help page on talk pages) expects : for talk pages in general.
  • w:ja:WP:TPG (guideline on talk pages) also expects : for talk pages in general, except deletion discussions where * is used.
  • w:ja:Wikipedia:削除依頼 and w:ja:Wikipedia:投稿ブロック依頼 (request for deletion and request for block) expect *.
  • w:en:WP:DISCUSSAFD
    • "Start comments or recommendations on a new bulleted line (that is, starting with *), and sign them by adding ~~~~ to the end. If you are responding to another editor, put your comment directly below theirs, making sure it is indented (using multiple *s)."
    • "If you want to expand on your own comments, add further text to your existing comments in preference to creating a new section. You can start a new paragraph indented the same as your bulleted paragraph by starting a line with a colon (:)."
  • w:zh:WP:AFD
    • * {{Delete}}, your opinion. --~~~~

Approaches

A living list that has not been discussed with Editing Engineering.

  • #1: enable people to choose the syntax the Reply Tool uses to indent the comments they post with it on a per comment basis.
  • #2: enable wikis to set exceptions for what syntax the Reply Tool uses to indent comments on specific pages

Event Timeline

ppelberg renamed this task from How might the Reply Tool be made to output different indentation syntax depending on where it is being used to Enable Reply Tool to use context-specific indentation syntax.Sep 26 2020, 12:41 AM

Since DiscussionTools especially targets junior contributors, who are likely not to be aware of these conditions, I think the only viable solution is to let senior contributors preset the indentation style (approach #2). For the implementation, I can imagine a magic word that controls the indentation style on pages it’s embedded in.

This is a good point; I'm glad you said something, @Tacsipacsi.

For the time being, we are not going to move forward with task and instead, consider building a new tool or enhancing the existing Reply Tool to explicitly accommodate the voting-style conversations this task was created to support. [i]

At ruwiki (especially), editors want to be able to decide whether to use : or * for a first reply. Is this the best task to represent that feature request?
