Not getting notifications while using the Wikipedia app
Closed, ResolvedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to Reproduce:
Use the app, receive a message on talk page. Tried with wiki.pt.

Actual Results:
A notification is fired at the cell phone for seconds (I could momentaniously see it), but then when looking for it in the app, it's nowhere to be seen.

Also: the notifications list is well hidden inside a context menu only visible at the initial screen.

Also: when trying to open a notification from there, it constantly threw an error. The information that appeared was that it was a "network error", which is absurd, since it was working normally otherwise.
Conclusion: Using the app is like being inside a bubble, without contacts with the exterior. It's no wonder there's so much people complaining here that using the app caused their Wikipedia account to be blocked, for reasons they don't understand.

Expected Results:
Notifications should be very visible and very intrusive to editors using the app.

Event Timeline

@Darwinius: Hi, which exact Wikipedia app is this about (Android? iOS?), and which app version?

@Darwinius: Hi, which exact Wikipedia app is this about (Android? iOS?), and which app version?

Android. I suppose it's the last version, I downloaded it a few days ago. I'll try to see what it is from the cell phone, when I have it back.

@Darwinius Thanks for the report! If you could provide a bit more detail:
If I'm understanding correctly, someone left a message on your user talk page on Portuguese Wikipedia. And then you looked in the Notifications screen and didn't see the notification there.
Does it appear in the list of Archived notifications? (i.e. in the Notifications screen, go to the overflow menu at the top-right, and tap "View archived")

Also, what is the primary language that you have set in the app? Is it also Portuguese?

Note @ToBeFree's link is regarding the iOS app (not Android as in this ticket). But this is a problematic issue both ways - communicating with editors is very difficult without notifications.

@Dbrant, would you mind having a look at this again? Perhaps this is a combination of two issues in one task; perhaps it's the same underlying problem. There is something that needs to be fixed because it causes disruption in the community.

The discussion you linked seems to refer to the iOS app, while this task only applies to the Android app.
The Android version does indeed support push notifications, and we believe that the specific issue as outlined in this task has already been resolved. For issues with the iOS app, please file tasks under the iOS team's work board.

@Dbrant, the problem does not affect my own (non-iOS) devices and I couldn't provide a detailed bug report nor any reproduction steps even if I wanted to. I was hoping for the responsible team to have a look at this unbureaucratically. If it helps the team to file a task, please do so.

ToBeFree claimed this task.
ToBeFree raised the priority of this task from High to Needs Triage.

(Per T263943#6775076, I guess this specific task can be closed then, but something needs to be done about that iOS bug affecting multiple enwiki users)
