A look at the issues and docs linked above doesn't suggest that this has seen any movement upstream. I'm moving this to our "Radar" board and leaving the upstream tag in place. I'll ping some threads upstream but I don't have high expectations.

I note someone wrote a Chrome extension called Gitlab simplifier to remove some of the clutter. I haven't tried it or looked at the source, but might be worth looking at for interested users.
