Description

I opened this task per users complaints on arwiki.

When enable Email me when a page or a file on my watchlist is changed on Arabic Wikipedia, you'll receive the emails well, but they are overlapping and disorganized. So can we make the direction Right to Left?

The email come from Mediawiki:Enotif body

Hi @alanajjar, thanks for taking the time to report this! Please read and follow https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug and explain clearly what exactly is "disorganized and overlapping", so non-Arabic speakers can understand what the problem is, and what you expect to happen instead. Thanks.

If we can make the text direction Right to Left in RTL wikis (like arwiki, fawiki..etc), maybe will fix all issues, which include:

  • Dates and usernames overlap, especially if usernames in English

  • It is incomprehensible that these text appear like a square instead of paragraph

@alanajjar: Do you mean that the order of words is wrong? If so, could you please paste (as text) both a sentence with wrong word order, and the same sentence with correct word order?

And/or do you mean that the text should be right-aligned, instead of left aligned? That might require adding a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-to-left_mark (however not sure how simple that is in plain text notifications; as long as T15303: Implement HTML e-mail support in MediaWiki is not solved).

  • Dates and usernames overlap, especially if usernames in English

Could you please paste (as text) what the current wrong overlapping text, and how the text should correctly look like?

  • It is incomprehensible that these text appear like a square instead of paragraph

That is a different problem... See T58063: Enotif notification emails in some languages have excess unneeded newlines (due to wordwrap counting bytes instead of characters) instead.

And/or do you mean that the text should be right-aligned, instead of left aligned?

Yes, should be right-aligned instead of left aligned.
If you write the same sentence on enwiki it'll be misordered, and in arwiki it'll be ordered well, due to left/right aligned.

Text (misordered): عدلها Nesrine elkhatib142 في 7 أكتوبر 2020.

That is a different problem... See T58063 instead.

Thanks

At first, I’d try to add Content-Language header to the mails—it at least gives mail clients a hint; if message is in Arabic, it may automatically select right-to-left instead of left-to-right. (And even if it doesn’t, we’ve helped screen readers to pronounce the text correctly, at least apart from the user name and page title.)
