Request creation of CATABOT VPS project
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Project Name: CATABOT

Wikitech Usernames of requestors: Devnull

Purpose: I am doing a project for my school that includes creating a bot that would sort through data.

Brief description: I am doing a project for my school that includes creating a bot that would sort through data such as but not limmited to:text, documents and images. If the project succeds the end result would be a UI that people would use to search a subject. The bot would then search for that subect using predefined knowlage and return the results to a box in the UI. The bot also may have a tool to input an image to be catagorized by subject. I do not expect the project to succeed but it's worth a try.

I would like to use the VPS because I need an enviroment to run the project out of but can still run things like servers gcloud and apt commands like apt-get.

I may need database and apt access. I highly doubt I will need root access but it may be possable

After the project I may continue using the VPS just to look around and test bots and/or features

How soon you are hoping this can be fulfilled: as soon as possible

Hi @Devnull, thanks for taking the time to report this and welcome to Wikimedia Phabricator!

We generally do not grant Cloud VPS projects for single user development use. The reasoning is that Cloud-VPS virtual machines are a constrained resource, and we do not have the ability to provide a VM for any and all Wikimedia technical contributors for personal use. See https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Cloud_VPS_project#Guidelines_for_project_requests for more information.

Could you please elaborate who else is involved, what kind of "data sorting" is planned, and how Wikimedia communities will benefit from that? Thanks a lot!

The project mostly only includes me and maybe a friend if i can get one to help. I think wikimedia communities will benefit because if my project succeds this is an easy to use tool for catagorizing all sorts of media so when posting it you can give it a catagory that future users can also search to find the image. Mostly it is just for me/my school because i am doing something called a passion project.

If this is not ideal criteria for a project/vps please tell me and I will go try and find alterative. It is no inconvenience because this is a long running assignment.

Also in further information i just want to notify you that i just need minimal disk space as the vps will mostly be used to configer gcloud and host some compiling tools.

I have a request for membership for this project waiting there to
I am still waiting.

The majority of project requests are approved, but there are some things which will cause further discussion:
...
"Laptop in the cloud" projects for a single individual to use as a personal development machine

Projects for use by single individuals raise a problem of fairness and inclusivity. The Cloud VPS environment does not have the resources to accommodate these projects. The Hardware donation program or another Wikimedia grant program may provide an alternative for some individuals.

What are the other programs?

How do/should I access the other resources?

Please @Devnull do not reopen the task unnecessarily, we still see it and can comment on it even if it is closed.

Hi @Devnull, see this comment ☝️, this page gives a good explanation of what Toolforge is and how it compares to Cloud VPS. https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Portal:Toolforge is also a good link to look at to understand what it is.

Toolforge is a Platform as a service (PaaS) solution. It provides web servers, databases and other data storage, and a distributed job processing system as managed services that can be used by tools and their maintainers.
