Review and close loophole allowing recurring Endowment gifts
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Currently we do not offer an option for automatically recurring donations to the Endowment. At least one donor -- CID 28491331 -- has been able to do this, however. Could we review and correct how this loophole was possible?

@MBeat33 can you stop this recurring charge?

@EWilson these are super rare and there is no obvious way this could have happened. But we'll take a look. Thanks for spotting it!

Sure thing @DStrine, I canceled the two recurrings for this donor.

Hi, all.

Please pardon me. I should have been more precise. We don't want to lose
this donor by cancelling his contributions. Rather, we simply want to
review and close this loophole to avoid other possibilities of
exploiting it.

@MBeat33, as this is looked into, is there an inconspicuous way to *uncancel* his
recurring gifts -- or at least his recurring gift to the Annual Fund, which
isn't problematic at all?

@DStrine Here is most of what you'd want to know about these recurring endow donors:
select * from analytics.all_donations_cube where contribution_recur_id is not null and financial_type = 'Endowment Gift';

I've added the raw output to the Recurring Donations Yesterday dash & you can query it directly in the SQL Lab editor in Superset if that's easier than terminal. It looks like a number of people started a donation via an Endowment source and the recurring donation was converted to cash (ie to the AF), but some some donations continue as Endowment recurrings. Most originate via 'Wasytogive'.

@EWilson I was too hasty! Sorry about that, I'm checking to see if we can restart the AF recurring and if not, I will ask this donor if they can create a new one.

Ah sorry. He have canceled these in the past so that was my knee-jerk reaction here. There isn't a way to re-enable these. @EYener noted that we probably have 10-50 endowment recurring and we're really not sure how that happened.

No worries. I reached out to the donor to invite them to make a new donation.

I just noticed a new recurring endowment donation come in from today's appeal. CID 6625822. He used to have a recurring AF donation that he ended in June 2019. Not sure how he set up this one for Endowment. It is fine to just leave this be (no need to cancel the gift), but I'm alerting you just as an FYI since we have a thread on this.

Thanks @AParker! The only way I can think of this happening is that the user has edited the URL on their own. As we saw in the standup today, people do this as jokes or to get a certain user experience. This would be very hard to block. We may not have time to investigate this more in December but this is on my radar.
