Description

Many (most? all?) MPEG video files on commons seem to lack proper thumbnail images. This results in weird-looking results and a black preview image on the MediaSearch page. But the problem is also noticeable on the underlying File pages for the videos in question.

It seems like something is preventing proper thumbnail generation for these files.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Go to Special:MediaSearch on Commons, and search for videos with the file type "mpeg" filter active. Here's an example search (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MediaSearch?type=video&q=march&mimeType=mpeg)
  2. The grid will not display the previews

Note: The file page also doesn't display the previews for mpg format (and the thumbnail is also not displayed):

The solution for Special:MediaSearch could be to display a nicer placeholder?

I'm going to try to figure out why this is happening. This is an issue effecting all browsers, not just legacy ones (IE11 or old Safari).

I suspect something is causing the thumbnails to not be generated correctly.

Here is an example search that includes a bad result: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MediaSearch?type=video&q=march&mimeType=mpeg

Here is the actual file page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_River_Arun_in_flood_at_the_north_of_Nuthurst,_West_Sussex,_England,_25_March_2020_Video.mpg

I will note, the actual file page on Commons is also lacking thumbnail images, so this may be an underlying problem.
