Suggested Additional Functionality for Special:Nearby
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

First off, I want to say that Special:Nearby is an AMAZING tool that I love using. Being able to see what pages are around me is a tremendously helpful way to find content to edit and improve.

Would it be possible to add some additional functionality to Nearby? Specifically, I'd love to be able to:

  1. Extend the range of pages shown. Particularly in rural areas, it may be helpful to see pages that are 50-100 miles away so that the next time I drive by there, I can take a picture of the location. Additionally, for rural areas, the current range sometimes returns only a few results which limits the ability to improve pages in your area.
  1. Manually set your location (e.g., through zip codes). There are several geographic locations (e.g., where I have family, where I've previously lived, etc.) that I'd love to see what pages are around those spots and improve them that way.

Again, this is a really great tool that really encourages folks to edit and brings in new users to Wikipedia and I'd love to be able to make even more use of it. Thank you!!

Event Timeline

Hi @DocFreeman24, thanks for taking the time to report this and welcome to Wikimedia Phabricator!
Could you please check https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug and split this into separate tasks, to cover only one topic per task?

That would allow to have more specific task summaries which allows distinguishing when looking at a list of tasks, and it will also allow to track the progress and status of each topic. Hence I am closing this current task as invalid. Thanks for your understanding!

Just a note that T247221 covers request #2 and #1 is not possible because of performance reasons. A solution to #1 is being experimented with by allowing map exploration, but this is unlikely to be shipped to Wikimedia as is because of scaling challenges with the Maps extension, but I'm hoping to get up a tool to that effect on wmfcloud.org.
