Add Wikidata names to mulitingual maps (rendered tiles and static images)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

In some (many) cases wikidata has a better list of multingual names than OSM; however from what I can see they aren't being mapped onto OSM objects, even when tagged. This is therefore either a bug report or a feature request, I am not sure which.

This would be very useful, Maptiler are doing this with very good results. Selfishly I would like the la.wikipedia.org maps to display more Latin than they currently do (see for instance Villa Santi Albani (St Albans)), especially where articles about towns with Latin names then display these names in English on Wikimedia's maps. I suspect this happens with other language content also.

FWIW, this is the work Maptiler/OpenMapTiles is doing for using Wikidata labels in the maps

@MSantos Does that mean Latin (and other language) labels should be imported and appearing?

@JimKillock actually, no. We don't support it in our infrastructure currently. We have a different strategy on data import (which is also outdated and being evaluated by our team), but no plans to add support for Wikidata as of now. This is a feature request and should be raised for product decision.

The reason I tagged WMDE is that they are currently planning to add features on Wikidata related to geolocation, this task is the opposite, but maybe it could be of interest to the Wikidata community.
