“Wikipedia Southern Altai” — please, do not use such term, this is simply Altai language, not “Southern”. There are many small languages in the northern part of the Republic of Altai, but the only standard norm is Altai language. That's why the Incubator project of “Northern Altai” language has no perspectives because we should create at least three more projects for those Northern Altai languages (Chelkan, Kumandy, and Tubalar/Tuba).

The term follows what was used for the request on Meta the entire time and is also how the language is named in the ISO 639-3 standard we use.

But the community is absolutely discouraged by this mention of the “South”. I reassure them that they can use the correct name within the project.

Someone once in ISO added the word “South” to counterbalance of “North,” and this error has been spreading ever since. It is not correct.

And one more thing, about the time zone. I think that at the time the request was created, the Altai Republic and Omsk Oblast were in the same time zone (UTC+7), but there were a few changes in the mid-2010s. As a result, there is only one region in the Asia/Omsk time zone in Russia - the Omsk Oblast itself. And the Altai Republic now belongs to UTC+7 — this is Asia/Novosibirsk (=Krasnoyarsk Time).

The closest valid timezone is Barnaul — centre of the Altai Krai. In the past, the Altai Republic was part of this region.

I can't speak for the whole Language committee, but as far as I can tell, both issues are just a technicality.

The timezone issue is completely trivial: It's Krasnoyarsk time since 2016.

The language code is alt, and everyone agrees on that. When dictionaries, reference books, and governments documents in Russia say "Altai language" (алтайский язык), they refer to the Southern variety, the ISO code of which is alt, and which also has many more speakers. For example, the article Altai language in the Great Russian Encyclopedia says clearly that literary Altai language is based on the Southern variety. I am not aware of any controversies or conflicts surrounding this; if anyone is aware of any, please bring them up, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing.

But this, too, is just a technicality. "Southern" is written here just as the title of the task, and as far I know, it won't appear anywhere. The search results title is "Altai Wikipedia" in English, which is fine.

I don't see any problems anymore.

Indeed, there was a technical issue when creating the wiki that prevented the email to go through. Do you think I should send it manually?
