MediaWiki download page says that (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Download) the archive is only available as .tar.gz. That page also says that it can not be extracted on Windows with 7zip and on MacOS with Unarchiver. There are a number of other popular tools which can not extract this file.
T257102 was reported more than 6 months ago, patches has been applied and the issue exists till today. As those two tools are among the most popular tools to archive/ extract on those platforms, i assume a large number of users facing issues every single day.
I would like to have a simple zip file which can be extracted on Windows without any additional tool. Windows supports zip extraction out of the box so it will be easier to get started with MediaWiki.
Steps to Reproduce:
To confirm if the issue exists follow the steps mentioned below.
- Download MediaWiki
- Try to extract the archive using 7zip on windows/ Unarchiver on MacOS
- You will see warning/ error and/or the installer will not work
Actual Results:
Extraction failed and install failed as a result.
Expected Results:
Archive file can be extracted without any additional tool. I expect to have multiple archive version/ file formats so that a one does not need to install other tools to extract. MediaWiki may have 3 different versions for Linux, MacOS and Windows.
