Show listadmins (names or email addresses?) on main page of each mailing list
Open, LowPublic

Description

I would prefer to have the usernames of list admins on the main page again.
Don't know why they are not visible, but it is quite annoying with small lists that you cannot approach a list-admin in person if you need them.

I can imagine with bigger lists, and open registrations there might me problems with having the usernames on display, but with invite-only it should be an option to approach people in person (instead of through admins@), especially if it is urgent and you want to be able to reach out through other ways then just email - some people are more responsive on Telegram or IRC for instance.

This sounds unrelated to the parent task.

Hi, as you wrote "again", when was this the case? Does "main page" refer to https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo ?

Don't know why they are not visible,

Admin info is listed on each list's info page, so they are visible I'd say.

I don't understand the steps to reproduce, I'm afraid. Could you please follow https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug and elaborate, plus provide links? Thanks a lot! :)

This was intentionally requested in T150164: Mailman: Consider hiding real list administrators email addresses and implemented in one of the mailman upgrades. Don't know exactly when it changed.

I agree that for some (most?) lists it would be nice if we could see the *names* of the admins without needing to display their email, opening up for extra spam (e.g. https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-l/2020-September/095638.html). Then again, we post everyone's email address in the archives...

FWIW, It looks like mailman3 has the same display, e.g. https://lists.fedoraproject.org/admin/lists/desktop.lists.fedoraproject.org/ but I haven't looked to see if it's configurable.

Thank you legoktm.

@Aklapper I'm referring to the information page like https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedianl-l
Before the last update you could see that this list was managed by Effeietsanders, Ciell and Germien Cox - maybe with their email addresses as Legoktm says. Now it only states "Wikimedianl-l wordt beheerd door wikimedianl-l-owner at lists.wikimedia.org". Not everyone has access to the archives (specifically not with invite-only email lists).

@Ciell, if I understand correctly you're not necessarily after listing email addresses again, but rather after showing some kind of (nick)names which then would allow to identify and contact people via different means (not: via email). Am I correct?

I don't think that the Mailman software would support this currently (except for showing email addresses, which got removed in aforementioned T150164). :-/

@Aklapper Yes, correct. For instance for urgent reporting, this would really be a plus, or with lists were there are little or no responses, it would be nice to know whom to ask if the list is still actively being managed. I think right now this is registered nowhere?

@Legoktm where in the archives should I be able to find who the list-admins are?

We are still on Mailman2; available related options in our Mailman2 admin interface only allow entering email addresses:

You don't see "personal" addresses on the listinfo page because the moderator fields are intentionally empty (see T150164), and as far as I know we don't differentiate between "owners" and "moderators".

I don't see a feasible way to "fix" this, apart from strange and undiscoverable workarounds (e.g. have a script which parses all owner values for all lists, then strips the @ and the domain, and then dumps the data onto yet another undiscoverable wiki page).

it would be nice to know whom to ask if the list is still actively being managed

Related: There is T270368: Have a regular cronjob which alerts about (potentially unadministrated) mailing lists with large (or aged?) moderation queues which comes from a different ankle but has the same problem in mind.

Yes, that sounds about the same.

We have several lists (our admin-list for instance) that do not allow open registrations, and members to the list are added by the list owners. Atm it is not visible who they are, not even for me as a member to the list, which is actually kind of strange.

As a temporary measure, I would suggest manually adding the names of the list owners to the list description, as e.g. wikimedia-l did.

Currently most mailing list resources are being devoted to getting mailman3 ready for usage, so it's unlikely this task will see a proper resolution before then.
