Description

At https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Thread:Support/MediaWiki:Visualeditor-autosave-modified-prompt-message/en it was suggested that, instead of "version", the message should use "revision"

This page was edited since you last loaded it. Would {{GENDER:|you}} like to resume {{GENDER:|your}} edit of the old version, or start a new edit of the latest version?

I agree that this change makes sense, but @Jdforrester-WMF suggested discussing it on phabricator first

Change 660927 had a related patch set uploaded (by DannyS712; owner: DannyS712):
[mediawiki/extensions/VisualEditor@master] visualeditor-autosave-modified-prompt-message use "revision"

I vaguely recall that when we tested language with users, 'revision' was a rather confusing, unfamiliar term (except for experts), and that experts knew what we meant. Obviously this is a call for the current team leadership. :-)

@Jdforrester-WMF, we appreciate you suggesting this change be brought up here.

Now, as to the decision of whether to change the copy in the dialog from version to revision, we would like for the message to be kept as-is. Read: keep version instead of replacing it with revision.

Rationale: we assume people who are newer to the wikis will be more familiar with version than they will with revision.

Note: we accept that in doing the above we will be contributing to more inconsistency in the language used in the interface. [i][ii]

@TadejM, in writing T273523#6831969 I assumed we do not have evidence that people who are newer to the wikis will be more familiar with revision than they will be with version. If you're aware of evidence that suggests the opposite, please re-open this task and comment it here.

Hi ppelberg. I'm reopening this task since the predominant term for article/page changes has been 'revision' not 'version' and the terminology should be unified (the 'one concept, one term' principle). 'Version' is rather used in the context of software development. Please see also https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Parameters_to_index.php#Page_revision_or_version, https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Version and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Page_history that mostly uses revision.
