As suggested on the Docker Community Slack (thank you rfay!), we could investigate the performance of using https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/remote/containers, and provide some good documentation for this. It's not a great solution as a lot of developers rely on PhpStorm, but it's probably worth exploring anyway.
