VisualEditor goes to subtly wrong URL after editing via the local "edittop" gadget on English Wikipedia
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Steps to reproduce:

  1. click on an "Edit" link, say the /* top */ section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1Q84
  2. edit and save

Expected result:
I'm returned to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1Q84

Actual result:
I'm now at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=1Q84&summary=%2F%2A+top+%2A%2F+
The rendering of this URL is almost the same, but there are no Edit links for the /* top */ section any more

Hi, what exactly is a /* top */ section , and where to find that in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1Q84 ?

Does this problem also happen in safe mode?

Unfortunately closing this Phabricator task as no further information has been provided. @Danbloch: After you have provided the information asked for and if this still happens, please set the status of this task back to "Open" via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown. Thanks!

/* top */ is how the Wikipedia editor labels the lead section, the section not in any subsection, in its summaries. You would edit it in 1Q84 by clicking the edit link directly adjacent to the article title at the top of the article.

Ironically, safe mode breaks the display of articles in the same way that the visual editor does. That is, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1Q84?safemode=1 doesn't have edit links for the top section. This is presumably another, closely related bug.

@Danbloch: Either I still don't get it, or I cannot reproduce:

  1. Firefox 86
  2. In the top bar, I press "Edit" (in the Read | Edit | View History" area (as I don't see any other obvious way to edit the top area of a page)
  3. I end up on https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=VisualEditor:Test&veaction=edit
  4. I change one word.
  5. I press the "Publish Changes..." button
  6. In the "Save your changes" dialog, I don't enter a summary and press the "Publish Changes" button
  7. I see "Your edit was published" and end up on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor:Test

I found now that English Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets offers a custom local item called "Add an [edit] link for the lead section of a page". I assume that is what you might have enabled? If that gadget is broken then please report it to the gadget authors - user scripts, gadgets, templates, custom CSS are local on-wiki content, and local content is managed independently on each wiki, by each wiki community themselves. Thanks!
