If the MW API call for importing takes more than 60 seconds (can easily happen with large pages, just happened to me with trvwiki, where the XML for a page had 30+ MBs, and already failed to import in time), the wiki import process will fail.

The tool should detect a timeout properly, and record the failure in the database.
