Description

Background

During user testing, the Suggestion reason was rated as not helpful, comparative to other fields. However, in the Growth user testing, it was considered important. For that reason we want to tweak the way the suggestion reason presents currently. It currently reads Found in the following Wiki: trwiki

User Story

As an Android app user completing the Image Recommendations task,
I easily want to understand why a match is being suggested

Related task: T278530

Solution
  1. Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (%language(s)) [1]
  2. Suggestion reason: image was found on Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia’s source of freely usable images
  3. Suggestion reason: image was found on Wikidata, Wikipedia's source of open data

[1]

  • If an image appears on one or more Wikipedias and Wikidata, then there's no need to mention Wikidata (the presence on Wikipedia overrides Wikidata) [updated per @Dbrant’s input]
  • - %language(s) should be outputted as two-letter, comma-separated value in parenthesis. Example sentence: Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (DE, FR, IT)
  • List a maximum of three languages in parenthesis: Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (DE, FR, IT) [updated per @Dbrant’s input]

Event Timeline

Hey @JTannerWMF, here’s a first take on rewriting the suggestion reason copy, feel free to rewrite / edit:

Before, hard to understand for a diverse audience:

  1. Suggestion reason: image was found in the following Wiki(s): %wikiLanguage(s)
  2. Suggestion reason: image was found in the Commons category linked in the Wikidata item
  3. Suggestion reason: image was found in the Wikidata item

After, easier to understand for a diverse audience:

  1. Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (%language(s)) [1]
  2. Suggestion reason: image was found on Wikimedia Commons, a free image license repository used on Wikipedia
  3. Suggestion reason: image was found on Wikidata, a source for open data used on Wikipedia

[1]
%language(s)should be written out in parenthesis, example sentence:
Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (German, French, Finnish)

Thanks for doing the first iteration of this Robin! These look great, the one that I think we could condense is After 2. It feels a bit long considering the space constraints.

Want to tag @Johan for some additional peer review here.

I like where this is going, and agree with Robin on the perspective. I just wonder if the descriptions aren't a tad complicated?

"... Commons, with freely licensed images Wikipedia uses" (or something like that – was trying to keep it short)
"... Wikidata, our open fact database" (or something – I think the current wording works better than the Commons description)

@Johan — studied your ideas and progressed it into the following copy 👇

[1]
%language(s)should be written out in parenthesis, example sentence:
Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (German, French, Finnish)

What do you think?

There are a couple of other cases to think about:

  • What if the image was found in other language Wikipedias and on Wikidata?
  • There are some images that are found on more than three other language Wikipedias (I have seen eight, or even ten). How should that be handled?

@Dbrant

What if the image was found in other language Wikipedias and on Wikidata?

To avoid an extensive long sentence, I suggest to add and Wikidata at the end. Example sentence:

Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (%language(s)) and Wikidata

There are some images that are found on more than three other language Wikipedias (I have seen eight, or even ten). How should that be handled?

Good one, if there are more than three languages, I suggest to truncate the output after the third value. Example sentence:

Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (DE, FR, IT, ...)

These strings are getting increasingly prohibitive to translate. Not all languages use the comma to separate items in a list, and not all languages have a concept of an ellipsis character as a continuation of a list.
I would recommend the following:

  • If an image appears on more than three Wikipedias, let's just mention the top three Wikipedias by volume (which is data that we have).
  • If an image appears on one or more Wikipedias and Wikidata, then there's no need to mention Wikidata (the presence on Wikipedia overrides Wikidata).

Like this? Suggestion reason: image was found in other language versions of Wikipedia (DE, FR, IT)

  • If an image appears on one or more Wikipedias and Wikidata, then there's no need to mention Wikidata (the presence on Wikipedia overrides Wikidata).

Sounds good to me.
