Track down "empty error" during reindexing
Open, MediumPublic

Description

User story: As an engineer running reindexing scripts, I would like to know whether an error has actually occurred, and what it is, so I know whether there is something I can or need to fix.

While reindexing wikidatawiki on codfw, the following "empty errors" showed up in the log. (One similar error occurred earlier for enwikiquote, too):

Task: oKbXycPGRTy8SrOKvYnbEg:96374225 Search Retries: 0 Bulk Retries: 0 Indexed: 33161900 / 93314284

The errors don't seem to cause problems and reindexing finished, but it would be good to know if there is a real underlying problem or a transient glitch causing them.

Since the error is hard to reproduce, time-boxing any effort to investigate makes sense.

Aceptance Criteria:

  • Time runs out on looking into it with nothing relevant being found, or
  • We find something that is or is likely to be the source of the empty error and remove it or add details to the output or make some other change to try to prevent an empty error message.
