In Mailman3 if a list has no owners, mail goes to root@
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Mailman provides a {listname}-owner@ address to reach the list owners. In Mailman2, if a list had no owners, the mail got blackholed or went somewhere else? In Mailman3, it ends up at root@.

For now sending it to root@ is fine, but the -owner emails often get a lot of spam and might not be something we want long term. Where else should we send these to?

I also don't know whether this is a change in behavior of Mailman or Exim or something else.

Event Timeline

Maybe send it to that special "list of list owners" mailing list?

Maybe send it to that special "list of list owners" mailing list?

That mailing list has around 1k members (and is open for membership by anyone). I'm slightly worried if something sensitive gets send there (which is quite possible) and then end up in 1k mailboxes.

The emails are coming from Mailman2...

Aaaand now it's going to listadmins-owner@ because of rOPUP9b8147775d1e: mailman3: Change owner email from root@ to listadmins-owner? I guess this works out. Why Mailman2 emails are being sent elsewhere because of a change to the Mailman3 configuration I'll never understand.

Probably not, that seems to be an issue with the sender, not the recipient.
