A huge deletion of articles created with Content translation more than articles created from scratch in a Wikipedia project is usually an anomaly. It means that the wikis in question are not getting the benefit of content creation that most of the wikis get by using the tool.
Based on data on the deletion ratio of Wikipedia articles created with and without Content Translation, some wikis with high deletion ratios have been identified and the Javanese Wikipedia recorded a very high deletion ratio in Q1 of 2021-2022.
Action plan:
- To communicate with key community members in different capacities (Top users of Content translation and Admins).
- To get feedback that can help us improve the Content Translation tool to decrease deletion rate and increase its usage in the selected Wikipedia project.
Feedback from Javanese community:
Most of the articles were deleted by an admin because:
- The quality of translations were below standard
- The translations were like mass production
- Most users of Content translation lack linguistic knowledge especially from English to Javanese and they still insist on using it.
- A common mistake is inclusion of foreign words in their translation, like making translations in Indonesian language in Javanese Wikipedia.
Community suggestions on improving Content translation:
- Include something that evaluates users linguistic ability before allowing them to translate, especially English to Javanese pair.
- Put limitations on how many translations one can make within a period of time. Probably 30 minutes.
- Add translation tags on translations to make it easy for maintenance.
- Most articles deleted are ones made from English and usually, they are difficult to understand.
