Display portion of Wikisource texts on Wikidocumentaries
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Wikisource transcluded texts which are linked with Wikidata need some way to be displayed on Wikidocumentaries.

For example, this page features this book edition on Bengali Wikisource, but currently it does not show any texts on Wikidocumentaries as the space for text is reserved for Wikipedia. But, inital part of the text of the edition can be displayed.

Wonderful, thank you for the proposal! I think we could start thinking about different alternatives.

I have another example in mind. A GLAM institution has made available their authority ID. The item in their collections is accompanied by an article-like text. This could also be displayed Wikidocumentaries. I think we should treat the Wikisource text and the GLAM text as equals. How would they be displayed?

A: The space for the main (Wikipedia article)
This would be a great option as it is in the prominent place on the page. I think the Wikipedia article should always be prioritized if it exists. Maybe there could be a cascading order of showing related texts. Wikipedia / Wikisource / external texts. They could easily be added in a pulldown. Maybe the existence of other texts is not obvious if they are behind a pulldown. That should be thought of, by making a visible list of all available texts for example.

It would also be possible to start a Wikipedia article from an openly licensed text by sending the article text to the Wikipedia editor with automatically generated references to the original text. From this perspective it would be natural to have the texts in the article section.

B: A separate component
The texts could be displayed more like any other related content in their own component. None of the current display formats gallery/map/list of are suitable for this, so another type of component should be created that is useful for texts. Then it boils down to deciding if the component is on the top of the page or somewhere further down.

How to deal with different language texts should be decided. Should the text be displayed if it is in another language, should they all be displayed, or should that be a filtering choice?

It is almost certain, that any edition of a work will not have Wikipedia article but might have Wikisource NS:0, whereas the work itself is not a matter of concern in Wikisource but will definitely have Wikipedia articles. So, they don't clash actually for Wikidocumentaries space. So, a cascading solution might not be necessary. If instance of = version, edition or translation has a Wikisource entry, it can thus be placed where the article is reserved for Wikipedia.

An edition is already language-specific, right? So we would be dealing with only one possible copy of the text. The Wikidocumentaries page for the work of the edition might not have a Wikipedia article either. The text could be presented there as well, or a link to the Wikidocumentaries page that displays the edition.

True, an edition of a work is language specific. If a work has another edition in another language, that will have separate Wikidata item and separate Wikisource NS:0 (if present).

The Wikidocumentaries page for the work of the edition might not have a Wikipedia article either. The text could be presented there as well, or a link to the Wikidocumentaries page that displays the edition.

On the other hand, For works with a Wikipedia article, there can be different editions (maybe in different languages too), so if the text is displayed there, it might be a problem about which one to choose from several editions.
