Create a dedicated logo for accessibility
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

To reinforce the communication and working group identity of people involved in improving accessibility of the Wikimedia environment, a dedicated logo would certainly help.

This ticket will serve the purpose of discussing ideas and actions around this topic.

Event Timeline

Note that this comes in the frame of Hackathon 2021, more specifically https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T282561

Here is a first idea to move toward such a logo: go through Commons to find some SVG logo on accessibility we might might with Wikimedia official logo.

So far I focus to derive something from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Accessibility_logo.svg

@Aklapper the idea went to my mind as I was about to create the Telegram channel https://t.me/wikimedia_accessibility so at least here.

@Ainali already made a great proposal that I love on the Telegram room, we are just waiting a bit for more feedback. If it proves consensual, we might use it for the Phabricator Accessibility tag, as well as on Meta and anywhere it makes sense and some people want to use it, I guess. 😄

Here is my draft if anyone wants to improve it. I submit it under CC 0.

  • Refine the logo for the group
    • should we play with ressemblance with CJK logograms like 人 (human), 亼 (to gather), 大 (see https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%A4%A7)…
    • provide a good verbal description, including its shape and its metaphorical inspiration:
    • Current version based on UN accessibility logo
      • Logo includes a stylized stick figure person, overlaid on a circle, similar to da Vinci’s Vetruvian man. The body is dark red, shaped like a K rotated 90 degrees right, arms spread wide. The head hands and feet are represented by simple blue circles. The semi circle underneath is green. The red, blue and green colors of Wikimedia projects were chosen as representing the 3 colors of light.

Logo includes a stylized human stick figure, overlaid on a circle, similar to da Vinci’s Vetruvian man. It is freely inspired by Wikimedia official logo and UN Accessibility logo.

The body is dark red, shaped like a K rotated 90 degrees right, arms spread wide. The head hands and feet are represented by simple blue circles. The semi circle underneath is green. The red, blue and green colors of Wikimedia projects were chosen as representing the 3 colors of light.

The logo keeps UN symbolism with a symmetrical figure connected to represent a harmony between humans in society, where open arms representes inclusion for people of all abilities, everywhere. And as the UN logo, it aims to symbolize hope and equal access for all, including accessibility of information, services, communication technologies, as well as physical access.

After inconclusive new proposals and consultation of current stakeholder on Telegram, we will stick with the logo already in use since several weeks.

Much thanks again to @ainaly
