[SPIKE] Load more appropriately sized images
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In response to T283725, find out what's the best API endpoint to use so that the KaiOS gallery images are more appropriately sized to Jio/KaiOS screen devices. The hypothesis is that reducing the size of each image will alleviate the memory consumption issue described in the parent ticket.

what does this mean?

The PR is merged.

Based on my testing this is making a small but consistent memory usage improvement.

Please test carefully for functional regression.

Re-opened the task since we should be aiming for values in the below 40 range.

I don't think we can optimize the images "some more" to go below the 40mb target, at least not in the gallery.

One thing we could do is stop loading the images inline in the article text and instead show a thumbnail icon that leads to the right image to the gallery. I feel it hurts the UX a little in theory but in practice those thumbnails are often too small to be enjoyed. My initial testing shows a small but noticeable improvement. Impossible to know if that improvement would be good enough.
