Add a link: algorithm suggests to link to the article itself
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

A user at French Wikipedia reports:

When on an article about a strange animal whose name I forgot, the only link proposed is the strange name of the animal on the first word of the introduction, I think there should be a rule to add so as not to reason in a loop.

However:

  • it is not possible to find back the article, since the user forgot it
  • this user hasn't saved any "add a link" tasks
  • I can't know if a redirect has been suggested.

@Trizek-WMF Thanks for flagging.

In prinicple, this should not happen. One of the hard-coded rules of the algorithm is to not recommend links to the article itself (either the link or anything on an anchor made up from the article-title). Therefore, I would be curious to learn more about the example to see where this might fail.

Added note: redirects should not be an issue since the algorithm is resolving all redirects when training the model and also when processing the links on a page (maybe there is an offset between the dumps used for training and the current article).

I was pretty sure it was one of the first rules. The you for confirming. ;)

Therefore, I would be curious to learn more about the example to see where this might fail.

I'm afraid it is not possible, since the user don't remember which article he edited.

Given the facts that:

  • The rule has been clearly defined
  • Redirects have a very low chance to be involved
  • I can't have more information about the issue,
  • I haven"t heard about it or experienced it myself

We can close this task as Invalid. Could be reopened if neeeded.
