Update Android "More" list options
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Background
Presently the More list options are

  • Username with log out destination option
  • History
  • Notifications
  • Talk
  • Watchlist
  • Settings
  • Donate

Task

  • Remove the "History" item from the More list. This item is redundant since the "Search" tab contains history anyway.
  • Send user to their user page when they click user name
  • Move the "Log Out" option into the Settings screen:
    • Create a settings section called "Account" at the bottom of settings (after "About")
    • Under the new "Account" section, make a "LOG OUT" button, with the same styling as the current button (red, all caps)
    • If the user is not currently logged in, the "Account" section will be hidden.

@JTannerWMF Some things to clarify:

  • Where exactly in the Settings list should "Log out" be placed?
  • Are we sure about putting History under Settings? As a user, if I see "History" under Settings, I would expect to get some kind of settings related to history, not History itself.
  • If we really do want History under Settings, where in the list should it be placed?

@JTannerWMF @Dbrant, some feedback below:

01)

Remove the "History" item from the More list. This item is redundant since the "Search" tab contains history anyway.

It’s been quite a journey to get to the current search (T256819). I remember not having listed 'History' as an item in 'More' first. After receiving lots of negative feedback on Google Play about its discoverability, we added it back. From my (UX) perspective and given that users can access it via search tab, it will be ok. I’m flagging though that this is likely going to affect some (outspoken) users.

02)

This is displayed, when I tap my user page (haven’t created one yet):

I suggest displaying the page from Mobile Web instead:

03)

Move the "Log Out" option into the Settings screen:

I’m not 100% convinced about moving this away from the 'More' menu but also don’t have strong feelings about moving to Settings. However, to give users additional context for LOG OUT within Settings, please add person iconography and username next to it.

Thanks for this, we will remove history and if there is confusion about this change we will educate users.

#2 sounds like we would have to bounce people out of the app, which sounds fine

We will remove it from the More menu. @schoenbaechler will create a mock to show the user icon in Settings

This is still existing, I think we settled on showing an external link icon at the right of the username in the More menu item (same style as for Donate) and take users out of the app (open in default browser) when they tap their username to avoid this situation.

Thanks for updating!

Thanks @cooltey, the external link icon looks good now. Here’s an edge case if users have both production and beta installed:

The setting in the production version that is causing it is this:

Any idea for a workaround or impossible to solve?

Hi @schoenbaechler,

Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do on this one. Please also consider that a user who has two Wikipedia apps install will be a small number, and it should work if the user has only one app install and it will open an external browser for that.

thanks for the clarification @cooltey — let’s move it to the next column, then!
