Currently to create external link, need to use the external link dialog and type the URL:
it is also possible to use Cite to automatically generate metadata and text for external link
but it is not possible to easily generate external link with metadata that is not <ref>
I think the simplest way to do it today is:
- Open cite, paste the URL and press generate
- Insert the reference
3.Double click on the reference and select "Change reference type"
- Select Manual => Basic
- Copy the generated template
- Delete the reference and paste the generated template
I think it would be nice to have a more convenient way to do it - for example a button of "Insert external link" that would open citeoid search, or do it when people add bare link
