Description

  1. Create a new account on enwiki and enable Homepage (and Help panel).
  2. Go to Special:Homepage and click on any of SE articles.
  3. The article will be displayed with Edit source tab. The pulsing blue dot will be present.

The guide panel doesn't have the suggestion to switch to VE.

  1. Click on the Edit source tab.

The article is opened in the wikitext mode and the warning appears on the guide panel. The blue dot is still present:

Note: Could be the following a bug?
If a user goes to a regular article (not via Special:Homepage)

  1. A user creates an account and the Guided tour is displayed. Select "Edit this article".
  2. There is only one tab for editing Edit source - the instructions refer to "Edit" ; When clicked, VE is open and the tab changes the name to Edit.

@ppelberg - can you confirm that having Edit source as the default editor option for new accounts is how it is supposed to be? And that clicking on it brings VE not the source editor?

It needed prioritization, but since then T291020: Newcomer tasks: open VE by default has been filed about the same issue. I don't want to close this as duplicate since it contains information about a second bug (probably not Growth-related). @Etonkovidova do you want to rewrite this task to be about that bug? Or split it out?

There is only one tab for editing Edit source - the instructions refer to "Edit" ; When clicked, VE is open and the tab changes the name to Edit.

That comes from GuidedTour's messaging, last modified in 2016 (T132989: GuidedTour registers a dependency on a key from Vector ('vector-view-edit') but doesn't depend on the skin (because you can't)). I am going to decline this in favor of focusing on T291020: Newcomer tasks: open VE by default; if anyone disagrees and thinks we should update GuidedTour's messaging to use "Edit source" in this scenario, please re-open.
