Tracking of on wiki registrations and edits during newsletter campaign (round 2)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Tracking document:

google doc

Goal:

As in the first Lead Nurturing Pilot Project, tracking did not work thoroughly, we want to start the campaign once again. We will send 5 newsletters with the main objective to enable the leads to participate in the wikimedia projects. Among other things, the leads are asked to create a Wikipedia user account and to start editing. These two objectives shall be tracked.

Target Groups:
People who subscribed for the newsletter via landingpage after clicking on an ad on Social Media.

Timeline
The campaign is planned to start approximately in week 44, on the 8th or 9th of November. We plan to send 5 Newsletters, for which people can register untill 23rd of Novmeber. . The registrations and edits shall be tracked untill 6 weeks after the end of the campaign, hence 31st of January.

User Journey
Targeted people follow an ad on social media or newsletter. They click and will be let to a landingpage where they can register for the Wiki-Post Newsletter.
With each Newsletter they receive information that shall help them to understand the projects and communities of Wikipedia, Wikimedia commons and Wikidata and how to get involved: step by step, they are supposed to learn how to create a user account, how to edit articles, how to upload pictures and more.
In each newsletter there will be 4-5 Call to actions that ask them for an action like creating a Wikipedia account, edit, visit certain homepages, upload pictures on Commons. The links in the mails thus lead to several landing pages either on wiki or off wiki.

Tracking
This is what we are looking for:
We want to track as many things as we can with this campaign. The tracking of user registrations and edit behaviour is very similar to the First round (Phabricator ticket).

This is what we need from Goran:
User behavior in Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons:

  • user registrations in Wikipedia
  • user edits in Wikipedia
  • page views of certain landing pages in Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons and Wikivoyage

General outcome (data collection) by Goran

  • on wiki registrations through the campaign per tag and project on a daily basis during the campaign (from 10th November through 22nd of December).
  • on wiki registrations through the campaign per tag and project in total (through 22nd of December)
  • Edits of new users on a daily basis during the campaign (from approximately 10th November through 22nd of December).
  • Edits of new users in total, classified in groups of 1 Edit; 2-10 Edits; more than 10 Edits up to six weeks after the end of the campaign (through 31st of January 2022)
  • page views of selected landing pages on wiki
  • Six weeks after the end of the campaign: editing behavior review (up until 31st of January 2022)
  • data of users starting and finishing one of the training modules lernewikipedia.de (how many users started a module? what is the completion rate?) (up until 31st of January 2022)
  • edit behavior of users who did the training modules (do users edit more after doing a training module) (up until 31st of January 2022)

The tags are provided in the google sheet.

Testing
Let's test the tags via test registrations before the campaign starts.

@GoranSMilovanovic
great, thank you.

Are you sure, however, that the campaign tag is correct with the user registration of test CE4 neu?:

2021 11 3 8 WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_4 3826723 Test CE 4 neu de.wikipedia.org dewiki

because it should have been: WMDE_2021_wikipost_2_2

Is it possible that we have a cookie issue once again, here?
Might only the first tag clicked on be associated to all the following registrationswithin one session?
I logged out after registering Test CE 3 neu of course, but maybe ti's still saved in the cookies? @kai.nissen , could you advise once again?

Might only the first tag clicked on be associated to all the following registrationswithin one session?
I logged out after registering Test CE 3 neu of course, but maybe ti's still saved in the cookies? @kai.nissen , could you advise once again?

That's the case. If there already is a value in the cookie, it doesn't get overwritten. Also it seems that it is not cleared when finishing the registration.

@kai.nissen thank you, that's interesting!
to sum up: Registrations are tracked, but cannot be clearly assigned to a link if the person registering has previously clicked on other tagged links. That's a pity, but I think it's bearable. Or do you have an idea how this could be solved?

@GoranSMilovanovic FYI

As far as I know, it's not unusual to keep the first entry, since it was the source that first drew a user's attention.

Of course, the behaviour can be changed. But I strongly suggest to change Extension:Campaigns rather than enhance the hack. That way it'd also be possible to log the campaign tag across projects like Wikidata or Commons.

@kai.nissen thanks for the explanation: I am absolutely not familiar with Extension:Campaigns. Is there anything I could do? Maybe you have time for a short call? You can send me an invitation.

It's the MediaWiki extension behind the campaign tags. I didn't mean to confuse you, this is not something feasible for the upcoming campaign. I was suggesting to add what Adam's Hack™ does as a feature to Extension:Campaigns and go from there when thinking about new features or changed behaviour.

Good Morning @GoranSMilovanovic ,

we've finalised our newsletters and added a few more links to be tracked, as you can see in the tracking doc.
Could you please ad them to the analytics?
We will start the campaign on Tuesday (9th of November).

Thank you!

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE @Verena @Tobi_WMDE_SW

Including @Verena and @Tobi_WMDE_SW @Addshore here because I know that they are aware of the following technical twist: the Adam hack.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE To put it in a nutshell, the Adam's hack is a mythological creature, a digital entity, a piece of code that enables the campaign tracking to extended outside dewiki, and it needs to be deployed for each campaign aiming to do so manually by its creator.

The concept doc for this campaign is a bit uncertain about what projects do we need to consider:

This is what we need from Goran:
User behavior in Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons:
user registrations in Wikipedia
user edits in Wikipedia
page views of certain landing pages in Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons and Wikivoyage

and then

on wiki registrations through the campaign per tag and project on a daily basis during the campaign (from 9th of November through 21st of December).
on wiki registrations through the campaign per tag and project in total (through 31st of January)

The thing is: we can follow the campaign tags across anything that happens in dewiki unless Adam's hack is deployed. Sincerely, I do not remember when was the last time that we've used it.

Please advise. If the analytics are needed for dewiki alone - all is fine. If not - somebody please do something.

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic , @Tobi_WMDE_SW
sorry if the tracknig doc is not clear on this point. If it is possible to use Adam's hack here, it would be great if we could track registrations and edits in Wikimedia Commons. If so, we need to add tracking tags for Newsletter Number 5. Wikidata will not be necessary.

@Tobi_WMDE_SW @Addshore
is there any chance we can use Adam's hack here for tracking Wikimedia Commons? Or would you rather recommend not to? We would need to test this untill Monday, as the campaign starts on Tuesday. PLease let me know. If yes, I will have to add a few more tracking links to be put in place @GoranSMilovanovic

Thank you for letting me know.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

The following pages were added to the analytics code search paths following @max_klemm and your suggestions in the tracking doc:

/wiki/Till_Eulenspiege
/wiki/Tristan_und_Isolde_(Oper)'
/wiki/Kunst_im_%C3%B6ffentlichen_Raum_in_Diekirch
/wiki/Wikipedia:Arbeitsgemeinschaft_Kunstwissenschaften_%2B_Wikipedia/Studientag
/wiki/Wikipedia:Stuttgart/Termine'
/wiki/Wikipedia:Asiatischer_Monat_2021
/wiki/Wikipedia:Stuttgart/Termine
/wiki/Wikipedia:Telefonberatung
/wiki/Wikipedia:Stuttgart/Termine
/wiki/Wikipedia:Telefonberatung
/wiki/Wikipedia:Stuttgart/Termine

As you can see, some paths were mentioned several times in the document. That will not affect the analytics code. Please check this list and let me know if anything else needs to be added to it. Thank you.

@GoranSMilovanovic, thank you very much.
We will start the campaign tomorrow.

@GoranSMilovanovic. unfortunately not, as there has been not repsonse. @Tobi_WMDE_SW and @Addshore, could you advise, please? Otherwise, we'll have to neglect the tracking registrations via Wikimedia Commons.

Adam's Hack™ is only deployed to de.wikipedia.org. It is not available on Commons or Wikidata. Although it could be added to the projects, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to do so. As far as I know this would also only be possible by doing a SWAT deployment on these wikis. It was meant to be a quick solution. Expanding the functionality to other wikis should be done by changing the Campaigns extension IMO.

ok, @kai.nissen : thank you very much for clarifying – I was not really sure about that. Hence, @GoranSMilovanovic, no more changes will be introduced to the tracking.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE @kai.nissen Thank you. The analytics code will be put on a daily schedule tomorrow.

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic due to technical issues the start of the campaign will be postponed to tomorrow (for sure). I hope this doesn't cause any inconvenience for you.
Thanks again and kind regards.

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic , we have started the campaign. Clicks and registrations should be possible in a few hours.
Fingers crossed that everything will work out :)

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE The campaign public directory contains two .csv files, one for pageviews and another one for user registrations.

Except for the test users (that are filtered out from the registrations file) there are no campaign registrations thus far.

Ok, thank you @GoranSMilovanovic. It appears a bit unlikely to me, that none of those people who have clicked, have registered.
Therefore, i've just regiestered another test-account: Test CE 5 neu following https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikimedia_Deutschland/LerneWikipedia?campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_4a_1
Please let me know if this or other registrations appear.
Thanks again!

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

Currently, all user registrations in this campaign are the following:

year	month	day	hour	campaign	userid	username	webhost	wiki
2021	10	28	15	WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_6	3823476	Test CE 1 neu	de.wikipedia.org	dewiki
2021	11	2	15	WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_1	3826327	Test CE 1 neu 2	de.wikipedia.org	dewiki
2021	11	3	8	WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_4	3826719	Test CE 3 neu	de.wikipedia.org	dewiki
2021	11	3	8	WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_4	3826723	Test CE 4 neu	de.wikipedia.org	dewiki

So, except for the test user accounts, there were no new user registrations since the onset of this campaign.

The new Test CE 5 neu test account is not registered, but please allow some time to run the test again - maybe the registration of this new test account is still not present in the event.serversideaccountcreation table.

This is the HiveQL query that we use to collect user registrations (a similar query is used in all WMDE banner campaigns; the approach is well tested and used for years already):

SELECT year, month, day, hour, event.campaign, event.userId, event.userName, webhost, wiki
      FROM event.serversideaccountcreation
      WHERE
        ((year = 2021 AND (month = 10 OR month = 11 OR month = 12)) OR (year = 2022 AND month = 1))
        AND event.campaign LIKE '%WMDE_2021_wikipost_%'
        AND wiki = 'dewiki';

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE I've looked for user registrations again; no trace of Test CE 5 neu found.

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic , thank you very much. That's strange, maybe it will take a few more hours to appear.

In the meantime, I was just having a look at the clicks delivered by Mailchimp: According to these, there has only been one single click to the CTA leading to https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikimedia_Deutschland/LerneWikipedia?campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_4 (and some other clicks on other tracked pages). This would explain, why no one has registered, yet.
However, I am confused by the numbers delivered via the public directory, as there are far more clicks listed there. There might also be a lot of clicks coming from testing, however, f. ex. we did not click any links during the last weekend.
Do you know what might be the reason of deviation between the public directory and Mailchimp?

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

Do you know what might be the reason of deviation between the public directory and Mailchimp?

No. I have absolutely no idea but maybe @kai.nissen would be able to help you. Again, as with the user registrations data, the approach that we use to collect banner interactions, including banner clicks, is well tested and used in our campaigns for some time already.

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic , @kai.nissen: might it be possible that the tracking of clicks does accumulate all the clicks ever done?

Good news: one registration was finally found.
Still, I don't understand why the test account Test CE 5 neu was not tracked. Is it possible that the cookie was even still in place here? Although, I didn't click any other link on Wikipedia before in yesterday's session.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

... if it's still possible, I would ask you to axchange one link...

Nothing would change. The analytics code looks up for the URI path, e.g. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProjekt_Fu%C3%9Fball irrespective of the campaign tag parameter e.g. ?campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_2_1 in our databases. Once found, the full path, including the campaign tag parameter, is analysed to establish the campaign channel (i.e. tag) that has produced the page view.

@GoranSMilovanovic : I am sorry, I did a copy-paste mistake here: I would like the URL path to change from https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProjekt_Fu%C3%9Fball to https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden and the campaign tag to stay the same. Is that possible?

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

... and the campaign tag to stay the same. Is that possible?

The only thing that needs to happen on the analytics side is to begin looking for the https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden page in our databases. Once again, that happens irrespective of the campaign tag - from the analytics viewpoint.

As of your campaign - in other words, will the tracking work - well, you need to consult with someone who knows how to setup a campaign.

The https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden will be added to the analytics code and looked up for in the next automatic daily update run.

Note. Since https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden is not on any of the previously seen URI paths in our campaigns, I am not sure if we can track its page views at all.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE Testing https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden page views now.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

Ok, we can track https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden as anything else. I am assuming that we are only looking for page views of https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden with any of the campaign tags (i.e. anything containing WMDE_2021_wikipost) attached (for example: ?campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_2 - and similar)? Because otherwise, there are plenty of pageviews of https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden, of course.

Note. I am also assuming that any of the pageviews of https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden have the ?campaign parameter attached to the very end of the URI query, for example: https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden&campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_1_2). Otherwise, important parts of the analytics code will need to change - only to run this campaign. That code is highly standardised, follows some conventions that were used in the past in all WMDE banner campaigns, and it would take some time to implement the changes specific for this campaign only because of a page that was introduced only today.

Analytics code is changed in accordance with T291919#7505960, T291919#7506133 and deployed now. Data collection continues on automated daily schedule from UTC 06:00 tomorrow.

@Tobi_WMDE_SW This campaign is beginning to take too much of my time and now I need to focus on Wikidata urgently. It is very important to keep the banner campaigns standardised as much as possible; all changes like the ones requested today (see: T291919#7505960, T291919#7506133) potentially might take some time to implement given that the analytics code for the WMDE banner campaigns expects that a campaign will follow some (reasonable and quite frequently used) standards characteristic of all our previous campaigns. If such standards cannot hold for a specific campaign, then we need to discuss that with the WMDE New Editors team well in advance of the campaign onset; changes in the middle of an already running campaign should be considered critical by default. The changes requested today for this campaign took two hours to test and implement. Please take into your consideration that I am working in parallel for the New Editors team on @Verena Comprehensive Report (T294485#7503311) which is not currently prioritised but must be completed at some point, and not to mention the (a) UI/UX changes for the Current Events dashboard and (b) several open Wikidata strategy tickets with @Manuel.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

... I am very sorry for causing too much effort with this request.

It is not your fault in any way. You are managing a campaign and from your perspective your are making legitimate requests in order to get better insights - and you are justified in doing so. The complexity, however, increases when a conceptual demand like yours meet technical constraints like the ones that I have mentioned to @Tobi_WMDE_SW in T291919#7506346 - and that is why changing things in the middle of a campaign is critical. It is a matter of how to organise our future work better - we will survive this campaign somehow, I believe : )

I created the following link with tag: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MyPage/Artikelwerkstatt?campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_2_5. It should all work now, right?

I guess so.

@GoranSMilovanovic , I am very sorry that this request took too much effort and time.
Your assumptions are correct: I added a campaign tag to the page, as noted in the tracking doc
Hence, this is the link put in the campaign: https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden?campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_2_1

@GoranSMilovanovic : one last question: where does the ?campaign parameter have to be placed? As you are putting it in the example, it is behind php. And there is an "&" in front of the camapign tag. Is that correct? The page only seems to work when putting the "&" as described by you above.
Hence this link is correct: https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden&campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_2_1
While this one is not working: https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Anmelden?campaign=WMDE_2021_wikipost_2_1

Do you know what might be the reason of deviation between the public directory and Mailchimp?

@kai.nissen
do you have any idea here?

and @kai.nissen >: here are my suggestions:

! In T291919#7505923, @Hanna_Klein_WMDE wrote:

@kai.nissen: might it be possible that the tracking of clicks does accumulate all the clicks ever done?

Good news: one registration was finally found.
Still, I don't understand why the test account Test CE 5 neu was not tracked. Is it possible that the cookie was even still in place here? Although, I didn't click any other link on Wikipedia before in yesterday's session.

The numbers in the *_Pageviews.csv file are visits on any of the linked pages with a specific URL parameters (campaign). This is logged every time the respective page is requested. There is a public page containing the links, so someone might have clicked them. Also, if someone starts their browser restoring previously opened tabs with one of those URLs, the page is requested and and it ends up in the report.

The mailing service provider logs clicks from e-mails. I guess, they do that by changing the links to something on their side, logging the visits and redirecting to the actual target. If that's the case, I'd say their report is the single source of truth for clicks in e-mails.

Thanks a lot @kai.nissen
Du you also have an idea why my recent test regsiteration of Test CE 5 neu was not tracked. Might it be, as suggested, that the cookie was still in place from last week?

That's hard to tell. If the cookie still had a value, it would have been logged. Does another tag have one too many registration?

I don't understand:

Does another tag have one too many registration?

At the moment we only have one real registration.
The other test registrations followed the tags as described in:

        AND wiki = 'dewiki';

Sorry, I thought you were looking at aggregated data.

Anyway, the registration in question is there:

@kai.nissen Thank you @Hanna_Klein_WMDE So it really took some time for the databases to pick it up but finally here it is.

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic , I hope you are doing fine.
I am wondering if there are any news concerning the edits done by the newly registered users. Have you found anything, yet? Will the edits be tracked automatically and be listed in the directory, too?
Thanks for letting me know and kind regards

hi @GoranSMilovanovic , have you had a look at this?
Thanks again!

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE I will, after Monday 2021/12/20. Thank you for your patience.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

I am wondering if there are any news concerning the edits done by the newly registered users. Have you found anything, yet?

Until now, only two user edits are made in this campaign (excluding the test users, of course): both on 2021-11-22.

Will the edits be tracked automatically and be listed in the directory, too?

The user edits are automatically tracked for this campaign but not listed in the public directory since the data encompass user names and user IDs.

Thanks for letting me know and kind regards

You are welcome!

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE @Tobi_WMDE_SW
Since I will not be around to the help the WMDE New Editors team as of January 2022, a few remarks about this campaign:

  • the user edits data are stored at one of our Analytics Client;
  • whoever in WMDE can access the machine (note: an NDA with the WMF is necessary for that I think) can just cat the file or copy it since the data are, obviously, rather limited;
  • the analysis can proceed in Excel, Liber Calc, Google Spredsheets or elsewhere;
  • you can get in touch with me in order to learn where the data can be found.

@GoranSMilovanovic , thank you very much for the update.
As registrations and edit behaviour are tracked automotically, I think it is sufficient, if I receive the final numbers of edits by 31st of January as described in the Tracking Briefing,

Yeas, I guess someone in WMDE will be able to reach the server and deliver the numbers to you. Good luck with your campaign, Hanna!

@Tobi_WMDE_SW , Hi Tobi, kannst du mir hier bitte weiterhelfen? Ich brauche eine Person, die Zugriff auf den o. g. Server hat und die Zahlen übermitteln kann.
Vielen Dank und Grüße

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE @Tobi_WMDE_SW

From the ticket description:

Six weeks after the end of the campaign: editing behavior review (up until 31st of January 2022)

I can deliver the numbers from this campaign now, but then should I do it again after 31st January of 2022?

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic , @Tobi_WMDE_SW
I need, as described in the doc:

  • on wiki registrations through the campaign per tag in total (through 31st of January) (runs automatically)
  • Edits of new users in total, classified in groups of 1 Edit; 2-10 Edits; more than 10 Edits up to six weeks after the end of the campaign (through 31st of January)
  • data of users starting and finishing one of the training modules lernewikipedia.de (how many users started a module? what is the completion rate?) (up until 31st of January 2022)
  • edit behavior of users who did the training modules (do users edit more after doing a training module) (up until 31st of January 2022)

It's ok if you deliver the numbers on 31st of January. There is no need for any further numbers afterwards.

Thank you very much.

Hi @GoranSMilovanovic ,

I hope you have been well and have had a good start to 2022.
Could you please send me the numbers of edits made by the new volunteers from this campaign and if possible also of those who finished the lernewikipedia training course (see message above).

Thank you very much!

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE @Tobi_WMDE_SW

I am on it today and it should not take long.

I hope you have been well and have had a good start to 2022.

Thank you! I hope the 2022 is kind to you too!

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE @Tobi_WMDE_SW

The user edits are shared via email.

...if possible also of those who finished the lernewikipedia training course

For the training modules, you need to get in touch with @Ragesoss who can deliver a list of users who took any training modules.

No edit classes (as formulated in T291919#7594300) were reported for the data at hand - as you will see, only two (2) users have made any edits, one of them editing once (1) and the other editing twice (2)...

@Tobi_WMDE_SW

  • removing this campaign's code from stat1007 crontab now;
  • removing myself as the task assignee.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE

@Ragesoss typically needs user names to obtain the training modules data. In the past, I would share the user names with him in an email.

I don't think you've given me usernames in the past, @GoranSMilovanovic . I've just run the script to generate updated CSV data of the same format I've sent you before. If that's what you need, I can email it to you now.

@Ragesoss You are right. I confused the format of your data with what I provided to you in the past: your datasets have user names and no user ids, and I have used user names to join them to my campaign datasets. @Hanna_Klein_WMDE needs data from one training module only: lernewikipedia training course (see: T291919#7666649). You can send the data directly to Hanna.

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE please let me know your email (or send me a message at sage @ wikiedu.org) and I can send you the data.

Hi @Ragesoss : great! Please send the data to hanna.klein@wikimedia.de
Thank you so much!

Hi @Ragesoss ! thank you very much. However, I am afraid that these are the data of the "Wikipedia Basiswissen"-training. In the campaign on hand we linked to another training, called "lerne Wikipedia": https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikimedia_Deutschland/LerneWikipedia
Can you see the data of this one, too?

@Hanna_Klein_WMDE I only have data for training modules that are on outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org. (Several of those are linked from that LerneWikipedia page.)

@GoranSMilovanovic
great, thank you.

That's the case. If there already is a value in the cookie, it doesn't get overwritten. Also it seems that it is not cleared when finishing the registration.

@Aline_Bruenger_WMDE

@Aline_Bruenger_WMDE, @Hanna_Klein_WMDE This task is tagged with a 2021 project ("Lead Nurturing 2021 pilot 2"), should this task still remain open?
