Requesting access to Superset for Swakiyama
Closed, ResolvedPublicRequest

Description

We've built visualization and dashboards for the Search team that require access to Superset. This appears to involve setting up a Wikitech account, getting added to the wmf LDAP group, and the analytics-privatedata-users POSIX group (ref: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Data_access#Dashboards_in_Superset_/_Hive_interfaces_(like_Hue)_that_do_access_private_data). SSH access will not be needed for this.

Requestor provided information and prerequisites

This section is to be completed by the individual requesting access.

  • Wikitech username: Swakiyama
  • Email address: swakiyama@wikimedia.org
  • SSH public key (must be a separate key from Wikimedia cloud SSH access):
  • Requested group membership: wmf, analytics-privatedata-users
  • Name of approving party (manager for WMF/WMDE staff):
  • Ensure you have signed the L3 Wikimedia Server Access Responsibilities document:
  • Please coordinate obtaining a comment of approval on this task from the approving party.

SRE Clinic Duty Confirmation Checklist for Access Requests

This checklist should be used on all access requests to ensure that all steps are covered, including expansion to existing access. Please double check the step has been completed before checking it off.

This section is to be confirmed and completed by a member of the SRE team.

[] - User has signed the L3 Acknowledgement of Wikimedia Server Access Responsibilities Document.

  • - User has a valid NDA on file with WMF legal. (All WMF Staff/Contractor hiring are covered by NDA. Other users can be validated via the NDA tracking sheet)
  • - User has provided the following: wikitech username, email address, and full reasoning for access (including what commands and/or tasks they expect to perform)

[] - User has provided a public SSH key. This ssh key pair should only be used for WMF cluster access, and not shared with any other service (this includes not sharing with WMCS access, no shared keys.)

  • - access request (or expansion) has sign off of WMF sponsor/manager (sponsor for volunteers, manager for wmf staff)
  • - access request (or expansion) has sign off of group approver indicated by the approval field in data.yaml

Hi @SWakiyama and welcome! From what I can see your wikitech account is registered with a different email provider, and indeed you're not registered in the "wmf" ldap group either.

We will thus need to:

  1. modify the email address to match your @wikimedia.org one, or register a new wikitech username (whatever you prefer)
  2. Confirm you read https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Data_access#User_responsibilities and signed the L3 document (even if it's not strictly applicable to your use-case, the type of access requested allows server access in theory).
  3. Add you to the "wmf" group which will grant you access to quite a few resources
  4. get approval from your direct manager (namely tells me it's Carol Dunn, but I couldn't find her on phabricator).
  5. Get a signoff from the analytics folks (@Ottomata / @odimitrijevic)

It looks like a lot of steps, but don't worry: I mostly need your input about the first item: do you want to create a separate account or should we just modify the email addess you used?

Hi Joe,

Let's please modify my email address to swakiyama@wikimedia.org.

Thanks,
Shari

Hi Shari,

I've modified the email address and added your user to the "wmf" group.

Can you confirm you read https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Data_access#User_responsibilities please?

I'll email your manager for approval.

Thank you, Joe. I'm confirming that I read the data access user
responsibilities.

Cheers,
Shari

Hi @SWakiyama once I have approval from your manager, I'll enable your account. Thanks for your patience.

After getting Carol's approval via email, I merged the patches. It means that Shari should be able to access superset in the next hour or so.
