More Experienced Contributors are interested in specific articles that they watch and edit. MVP of Image Suggestions is to recommend images to them for the articles they are watching or recently edited. The goal is to embed the recommendation in their existing Wikipedia activities, thus increasing the likelihood they will review the recommendations and add selected images as part of their current editing workflow. Based on the information provided in the notification, the user can go through their normal image addition workflow (e.g. choose to open up wikitext and put in the [ ] with the image reference or go through their Visual Editor Insert flow). We will not provide any help with adding the image itself; just the opportunity for the user to review the match.

Use Cases

As an Experienced Contributor, I want to receive a notification if there is an image suggestion for an unillustrated article that I have
a) edited
b) watched
... so that I can use it to illustrate those articles.

Acceptance Criteria

• Unillustrated articles and suggested images for them will be retrieved from the new image suggestions backend described in T299781
• Notifications are only sent for image suggestions with >TBD% confidence score
• Notifications are only sent for unillustrated articles
• Notifications are sent weekly Monday at 8am UTC/GMT-8 time zone (for everyone, not based on individual users’ time zones)
• Notifications are only sent to users with >500 edits who have not opted out of image suggestions notifications (see T292146)
• A user will receive a max of 2 notifications per week
• Users will only be notified about suggestions for articles on their watchlist
• Articles on the user’s watchlist that the user edited in the last 30 days will be prioritized (if possible, see T292312). Apart from this prioritization the order of notifications will be random
• A user will only receive a single notification (ever) about any article

Note that the v0 original proof-of-concept Image Suggestions API owned by PET is made obsolete by T299781 and will not be used.
