Map detail pane displays coordinates that are not those of the geolocated object
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

List of steps to reproduce (step by step, including full links if applicable):

What happens?:
In the detail panes, at the top right, coordinates are displayed (50.6259, 3.099) that are not those of the article (50.629422, 3.071569 in decimal degrees). If you move the map, these coordinates move also but the location icon stays at the same place.

What should have happened instead?:
From a user point of view, these coordinates are those of the place pointed by the location icon. So they shouldn't change when you move the map, nor be different from those of the article.
If they are only those of the center of the map, it should be stated clearly and I'm not sure they should even be displayed (what's their interest?).

Those coordinates are indeed just the center of the map which is in many cases useful as not all maps show coordinates in the title nor a single point, however, they are just confusing when used in <maplink> as per the example.

Suggestion: change the label to something less generic than just "coordinates".

There is considerable confusion around what these coordinates and external map links are or should be for. Here the expectation is that coordinates should be "pointed by the location icon", while per another task (T257137) the expectation is that coordinates should be of "the last feature you clicked". However, map necessarily doesn't display single point or may be without any overlays, as pointed out above, and also it isn't evident what coordinates should be retrieved for more complex geometries (polygon, line feature). If we'd try to address all these special cases separately, then the external maps pane would probably become too complex and inconsistent.

I agree that simple solution would be to make the label explicit and say that these are coordinates of the map centre. Also there'd less confusion around these coordinates if T157976 was fixed, too.

Though, really it feels like the maps dialog needs a complete redesign. Possibly the bottom-right "External maps" button should be removed, and instead the external maps pane could be interacted so that one clicks anywhere on the map and selects "External maps at this location", or something like that.
