Define the populations we will partner with on the Usability Improvements work
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

🧪 The Editing Team is serving as beta testers of the Product Development Best Practices Playbook by applying it to the Usability Improvements portion of the Talk Pages Project. This task represents doing work to support the steps described in the playbook's DEVELOP step.

T293322 represents the work with defining the overall strategy that will inform how we partner with volunteers throughout the Usability Improvements portion of the Talk Pages Project.

This task represents the work with defining the specific populations of people we will partner with.

Note: populations in this context refers to both the projects we will seek to partner with as well as the specific groups of volunteers at these projects we will explicitly seek out and invite to partner with us in this work.

Objectives

This section contains the objective(s) of/reason(s) for working with specific populations of people in the Usability Improvements design and development processes.
Partner with select populations of volunteers at a set of to-be-defined wikis to increase the likelihood that the Usability Improvement work is successful in enabling:

  1. Junior Contributors, particularly those who have historically been underrepresented within the Movement, to immediately recognize and use talk pages as places to communicate with other volunteers.
  2. Senior Contributors to more easily and quickly get a sense for the number of conversations happening on a talk page and level of activity within them

Selection Criteria

This section contains the requirements the group of wikis we partner with will need to collectively fulfill.

  • A wiki whose volunteers contribute in an RTL language
  • A wiki whose volunteers contribute in an LTR language
  • A wiki whose volunteers contribute in a non-Latin script
  • A wiki whose contributor base includes populations of people from/living in East Asia [i]
  • A wiki whose contributor base includes populations of people from/living in Africa [i]
  • A wiki whose contribute base includes populations of people defined in the ===Partner Populations section above

Partner Wikis

This section will contain the wikis that satisfy the ===Selection Criteria above that we will partner with in the Usability Improvement work.

Update
@Whatamidoing-WMF and I have converged on a set of wikis we plan to approach to partner with the Editing Team on the mobile talk page and Usability Improvement work we are are doing. [i]

Next steps
Before finalizing the set of partner wikis:

  • @Whatamidoing-WMF is going to begin reaching out to wikis to gauge their interest in partnering with the Editing Team in this work
  • @MNeisler is going to review the mobile talk page usage volume we will need to see amongst the wikis we partner with. See: T298271.

i. Talk pages project/Wiki selection/Mobile + Usability Improvement Partners

Is the idea that we have the draft list (not listed here) and will see if the wikis agree to work with us, and then if/when they do this ticket's "Partner's Wikis" section gets updated?

Yep.

Note: You can see the draft list of partner wikis here Talk pages project/Wiki selection.

This list looks great. Is there a separate ticket or place where we are figuring out the artifact that we will share with each partner wiki? The reason that I am asking is that we should have a plan (that's easily repeatable) for localizing the artifact into the appropriate language per wiki. I would want to ensure that we have specific people who we could collaborate with us in some form on that.

Yep – that ticket is T297988: Share Topic Container design approaches with partner wikis and populations

Sounds great.
