[SPIKE] Which section heading should we use to anchor the transition from reading to editing?
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

To increase the speed and ease with which people can start the change they clicked the Edit affordance within the sticky header seeking to make, we will be working in T296910 to ensure what people see in the moments between clicking Edit and the editing interface being ready for them to use remains consistent.

This task involves the work with defining the details of this transition moment. More specifically, in this task we will define which heading we will use to anchor the transition from reading into editing.

Objective

This section includes the objective of the moment we are trying to design in this task and will provide the frame through which we will answer the ===Open questions below.

To increase the speed and ease with which people can start the change they clicked the Edit affordance within the sticky header seeking to make, it is important that:

  • What people see when the editing interface loads is as similar as possible to what they saw in the moment when they clicked Edit
  • The content/browser window moves/wobbles as little as possible in the time between someone clicking Edit and the editing interface being ready for them to use
  • How and where people are landed within the editing interface remains consistent enough across all cases such that people can easily grasp how the affordance works and subsequently, be comfortable depending on it

Open questions

  • 1. Which section heading should we pick as the point we use to anchor the transition between the reading and editing experiences?
  • 2. What are the range of cases we need to answer "1." for?

Done

  • Answers to all ===Open questions are documented above

For the implementation in T296910, @Esanders used "the first section below the top of the viewport (usually visible)".
