Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalPreferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion
Enable automatic topic subscriptions. Feel hopeful.
Reply to a comment. No automatic subscription. Feel confused.

Current state:

It's working in Safari in my work account. It's not working in Firefox in my volunteer account.

I have not yet been able to reproduce this issue. See below...

In Firefox, visit a project where Automatic Topic Subscriptions are available
Verify you have the Automatically subscribe to topics setting enabled
Comment in a discussion you have not yet been subscribed to. E.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Whatamidoing_(WMF)/sandbox&diff=1059632490&oldid=1042926119&diffmode=source .
Notice that upon posting the comment you drafted in "3." the [ subscribe ] affordance turns into a [ unsubscribe ] afordance
From a different account, post a new comment in the same discussion. E.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Whatamidoing_(WMF)/sandbox&diff=next&oldid=1059632654&diffmode=source .
