Provide NUMBEROFVIEWS magic word (to directly give pageviews)
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
If I'm understanding the documentation correctly, the {{NUMBEROFVIEWS}} magic word used to exist as a way to fetch the pageviews for a specific page. It was removed in 2014 since the implementation was poor, but it'd be really useful to have it restored.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):
Allowing templates such as UpdatedDYK to directly give pageviews rather than just a link to check them externally.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):
User convenience

I wonder if we could add this to PageViewInfo (at least for WMF sites)

Aklapper renamed this task from Restore functionality of NUMBEROFVIEWS magic word to Provide NUMBEROFVIEWS magic word (to directly give pageviews).Dec 22 2021, 7:19 AM
Aklapper added a project: MediaWiki-General.

It was removed in 2014 since the implementation was poor, but it'd be really useful to have it restored.

It was forked out to Extension:HitCounters but having a quick skim of the extension page, It doesn't look there is a mention of that parserfunction being available though.

asaik, PageViewInfo can load pageviews for a certain period. So the total pageview since the page creation is not good to be handled by PageViewInfo.
