The letters ҧ (pe with middle hook) and ҕ (ge with middle hook) were replaced in the Abkhaz orthography in the 1990s with letters with descenders: ӷ and ԥ. These new letters are now widely used in Abkhaz books and websites.
The Abkhaz Wikipedia and translatewiki communities have changed all the content and localized strings to use ӷ and ԥ over the last few years. This is the last step in updating MediaWiki to the new orthography.
The capital letter is unnecessary in the language name, as with the other languages of the former Soviet Union.
Abkhaz Wikipedia community discussion about this can be found at its forum (village pump).
