Because it piqued my interest and I use that field to help me keep track of stuff.

$wgDisableInternalSearch

This prevents Special:Search's registration and expects an extension to provide its own Special:Search, leaving many broken links if no extension provides one.

Liagent, can you please give us examples of breakage so we can actually fix them?

Did you mean the breakages when no extension provides a search page?

This could be something that a volunteer could do, maybe.

Given that Discovery's primary responsibility is to search on Wikimedia wikis, where we will probably never want this feature, Discovery will not be working on this. Removing the Discovery-related tags for clarity.
