Red links are uncommon, so inexperienced people might think they're errors. The UI in the visual editor should explain a little about what that is, before someone removes red links (or adds unwanted ones).

Per my comment there, one way to handle this would be to, when someone clicks on a link (as in the screenshot), put something like "Unwritten article (learn more)" in the space where the short description would go for a written article.
