Improve coverage for Places on non-EN wikis by using Wikidata coordinates
Open, LowPublic

Description

Why are we doing this?

For Wikipedias that do not commonly include geo coordinates for location based articles, we should provide a fallback to allow articles to be populated in the Places feature in non-EN languages.

Quotes from diary study
  • Places is a very nice add-on on the app, but definitely you should make changes into this segment. When I click on Places, I receive only places that exist on English Wikipedia, which I found not useful, and you should use Wikidata for this segment. In many articles on my home wiki (Macedonian Wikipedia), we did not have coordinates, so if you switch on example to show places that exists nearby on Macedonian Wikipedia, you will not get many places, but if you use same thing with Wikidata, you will find coordinates and appropriate article about that place. At least you can have the option to filter results: a) show me results about places on mk.wiki b) show me results about places on en.wiki c) show me results about places on Wikidata.
  • As a long-time editor and Wikidata enthusiast I find difficult to understand why on the places I receive only articles on English Wikipedia with coordinates, but not places from Wikidata or even to have an option to view articles with coordinates on different Wikipedia.
