List of steps to reproduce (step by step, including full links if applicable):
- Use an iPad on iOS 15.3.1
- Open the Wikipedia app, signed in
- Go to an article and click on the pencil icon
- A pop-up appears. Select "Edit article description". This was my first time editing a short description on this device, which may be relevant to producing this error.
- Enter a short description beginning with a capital letter.
What happens?:
A warning appears stating that short descriptions should only begin with a lowercase letter, unless the first word is a proper noun.
What should have happened instead?:
The warning is wrong. English Wikipedia policy (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:SDFORMAT) states that "Each short description should start with a capital letter".
A related error is that the character counter on the same screen (where short descriptions are entered) shows a character count out of 90 (e.g. 38/90), while short descriptions should be "no more than about 40 characters", so the number should be 40, not 90.
I have been informed that different Wikis have different policies on ShortDescs, so this may require more effort to fix than I originally realized.
Software version (if not a Wikimedia wiki), browser information, screenshots, other information, etc.: I was unable to replicate this erroneous message. The iPad was on 15.3.1, as stated in the "About" section of the Settings app.
