Explore how to provide access to Section Translation from Wikipedia Apps
Open, LowPublic

Description

Wikipedia has apps for Android and iOS devices, and some users use those apps as their main way to access Wikipedia. Currently, Section Translation is only available on web. Thus, app users don't have an easy way to translate when they notice that an article is missing in their language, etc.

This ticket is intended to explore which would be the best way to provide access to the mobile experience of Content Translaiton (Section Translation) from the mobile apps (e.g., include translation as one of the contribution opportunities in Android's suggested edits).

This was surfaced in a conversation with a Telugu Wikipedia editor who asked about "how to access the Section translation from the Wikipedia Android mobile app". A similar question was shared by a Tamil editor on the project talk page

Hi Pau, we've lowered the priority since this isn't on the roadmap for now, but please let us know if you have concerns. Thanks!

+1 we received this feature suggestion from a user on the play store reviews.

Currently Section Translation is still in early stages and it is not available yet for all Wikipedias.

A note on this: currently the mobile experience is supported in 77 Wikipedias (and more to come).
Also, we made it possible to have the mobile experience available even if the desktop translation experience is still on beta, which provides more flexibility to enable the tool in more wikis.

  • Now the mobile experience is supported on Wikipedia for all languages.
  • A comment from a user asking for access to translation from the app suggests that they are using the notifications as a workaround to access the tool.

I'll update the description accordingly.
