[Session] Documentation to conquer the dungeon
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Navigating Wikimedia tech spaces can feel like crawling through a dungeon. Docs are the tools (and healing potions) we need to survive! In this session, we'll discuss how we can create excitement and peer support to help each other conquer the dungeon with documentation.

Thanks for adding this to the MW page! By the way, while there is no official space to put the description, you're welcome to add that too.

Session Details

Navigating Wikimedia tech spaces can feel like crawling through a dungeon. Docs are the tools (and healing potions) we need to survive! This interactive session will be a structured discussion focusing on the following questions:

  • What are the challenges and pitfalls in writing and maintaining technical documentation?
  • What tools and strategies do we have to help us approach these challenges?
  • What are the rewards of focusing on documentation, and how can we stay motivated as a technical community to continuously build a culture of documentation?
  • How we can create excitement and use documentation to conquer the dungeon together?

Key takeaways

Participants in this session (or those who provide input asynchronously) will:

  • Help define and direct our technical documentation efforts.
  • Help technical writers and WMF identify ways to support and enable everyone's documentation contributions.
  • Support connection and empathy with other community members who share your documentation interests and struggles.
  • Reveal opportunities for collaboration!

During this session, participants will be using live discussion in the Jitsi call and/or written input via multiple Etherpads to contribute to the discussion. After the Hackathon, we'll aggregate all the points from the live & Etherpad discussions and summarize it all here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Documentation/Technical_documentation_community_and_outreach_programs/Hackathon_2022_docs_discussions

Yes, I haven't had time to finish aggregating all the feedback yet bc of
focusing on dev portal launch stuff. Back on this now though!

Unresolving this because team offsites and vacation have caused me to STILL NOT FINISH IT. I will resolve this task when I've updated the wiki pages.
