Change logo for pi.wikipedia.org back to default
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Please fill out all the fields below:

  • Reason for change:
    • The current logo says that Wikipedia is a free dictionary (false). I lack know-how of svg creation, and requested a logo at commons with no response for a month.
    • Pali was originally written in Brahmi script, and presently written in at least 8 modern scripts (see "Pali" on English Wikipedia), no need to have Devanagari as the logo.

Event Timeline

From your post at VP, you said a few character is misspelt, and you would like to change the Pali version of Wikipedia logo to the English version. So why not to correct the wrong character and upload a new Pali version logo?

As I said,

I lack know-how of svg creation, and requested a logo at commons with no response for a month.

I cannot create a logo, there's the problem. Although I first supported the idea of correcting the misspelling, I later realised that Devanagari-only logo would be unrepresentative of the Pali-using population. In modern day, dozens of writing scripts are used for this language, including the Roman script, which also happens to be the dominant form of modern-day Pali writing. More information & references at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pali .

Infact almost all Pali articles and all localised Special pages are written in two scripts- Roman & Devanagari or only Roman even. See for example, the local equivalent of Special:RecentChanges. The project was later inflated with outright copy-paste articles from Sanskrit Wikipedia, Sanskrit being written in Devanagari. More information can be found in https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Stewards%27_noticeboard#Inflating_article_count_of_Wikipedias, and https://new.wikipedia.org/wiki/छ्येलेमि_खँलाबँला:Eukesh#Regarding_some_past_contributions_on_pi.wikipedia

Also, I have no idea where the current "localised" logo has come from. I'm currently an administrator here with access to all existing and deleted pages. I just couldn't find any community discussion regarding the same. Perhaps, it was done long before the current logo change rules were in place.
