Is sender editable in email template UI?
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

From @CDenes_WMF

are we able to set the sender field for Thank You emails in the CIVI tool? Right now there is a mismatch for non-English emails: the sender field says Maryana, even though the email text and signature are from Jimmy (see screenshot). However, we don't see where to change this in the CIVI template. Could you please advise?

Event Timeline

@CDenes_WMF and @TSkaff we don't have the ability to split who the email comes from based on language. Fr-tech and I talked about this and we think this hasn't changed much in the past. When it does we had changed all emails to match. I think you will have to go into each alternate language and change who the email is from in the body copy.

If you wanted this split by language in the future we'd have to investigate if thats possible at all.

Thanks for the update David. I would flag then that at the present moment, our English thank you email has been updated to Maryana but all other languages haven't been updated yet (due to bandwidth limitations and other priorities), and are still from Jimmy. So all non-English donors will currently receive an email with Sender Maryana and body/signature from Jimmy (screenshot above).
CC @krobinson for visibility on this because I expect you may get some tickets from donors who notice the mismatch.

I think it could be beneficial to be able to define the sender by language in the future, because we often do not update Thank You emails all at the same time in one big batch, but more on a rolling basis based on team bandwidth and priorities. I suppose that depends on if we expect our sender (Maryana) to be consistent/stable going forward, or if we expect any changes. @TSkaff any input?

You could update the signatures for all languages without updating the rest of the copy of the email.

Thanks for flagging @CDenes_WMF .

cc @KHancock99 for visibility in case we get feedback and need to track comments.

@DStrine I think we can close b/c, as you said, "we don't have the ability to split who the email comes from based on language.' We might ask separately to investigate how hard it would be to build, but it's not high priority right now.

@CDenes_WMF you can just ping me or Katie about TY email adjustments in the future b/c we can now control them, yay!

Thanks all,
Thea

ok @TSkaff and sorry all. These are little bumps in the transition of this process. I think some assumptions were made. We may have some more friction and edge cases like this as the process changes.

just to be clear about dividing the sender by language: We would have to investigate this to see if it is even possible. I'd need to hear a good business case for the effort we'd need to put into this.

RE "You could update the signatures for all languages without updating the rest of the copy of the email." That wouldn't work unfortunately, as a majority of our non-English languages are gendered, so we'd have to re-translate everything if we're switching from a male signature (Jimmy) to a female signature (Maryana)

The mismatch is not the greatest user experience, but I agree it's also not the highest priority. I'm also fine to close, now that DR is aware. Thank you!

DStrine removed DStrine as the assignee of this task.
DStrine added a project: FR-AutoTY-Email.

I'm reopening this to note that the older TY emails still say Jimmy and will until the latest translations come in. This needs to be tracked by the TY email team. This is now tagged and on their work-board.

Hi Team - just making sure the TY emails have been updated and that we can close this task @CDenes_WMF (cc: @Danny_B )

Hi everyone, the signees are updated in all languages and there's no mismatch:

WMF Thank You (OneTime and Recurring Receipts) has Maryana Iskander | CEO Wikimedia Foundation in the sender field and Maryana Iskander CEO, Wikimedia Foundation in its copy
End of Year thank you message (for monthly donors) and WMF Monthly Convert have Wikimedia Foundation in the sender field and in its copy

Perfect, thanks team - closing.
