Realtime Preview doesn't work well with Vector 2022 (too thin)
Closed, DuplicatePublicBUG REPORT

Description

List of steps to reproduce (step by step, including full links if applicable):

  • Open any article in Vector 2022.
  • Open the new preview.

What happens?:

The editor window becomes very thin and not very usable.
I know I can resize the preview window, but the preview window is also too small.

What should have happened instead?:

Maybe the editor should be full size (like special pages / history)? Don't know really.
You could also flip the bar to be horizontal I guess...

BTW. I have a gadget for making editor full screen. I guess you could incorporate that. Screen below.

Software version (if not a Wikimedia wiki), browser information, screenshots, other information, etc.:

Thin edit window and thin preview with maximum width editor in vector 2022.

This is also true of Minerva, which also has a narrow editor window.

There was indeed talk of allow-listing the action=edit page to be a "full-width" page in Vector-2022, like at Special:Log. @NRodriguez did we ever hear back from the Editing team about that?

I don't personally think supporting Minerva should be of great concern, as it is by design intended for mobile use. Though it is certainly true some users prefer it on desktop.

One of the goals for introducing the limited width was Establishing a common reading experience. Bearing that in mind, I'd like to suggest - let's maybe consider making the editor window appear in full width while keeping the non-live preview above it in limited width?

That's a good point. I'm guessing there's a LESS variable for the max width. Vector-2022 should make sure that's applied to the #wikiPreview element (which is the non-live preview output).

Correct, this is is all discussed in the ticket with a Figma specifying new designs https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T307725#7913755

Merging into T307725 to keep the discussion centralized.
