Add the MWStake logo (and link) to the footer of MediaWiki software
Closed, DeclinedPublicFeature

Description

Feature summary
Given that:

  • MWStake is on track to manage future MediaWiki releases for the WMF - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T293323
  • The mission of the MWStake non-profit is to support the non-WMF users of MediaWiki
  • MWStake has low visibility in the MediaWiki community

there is a possibility of

  • Non-WMF users of MediaWiki will not know about MWStake non-profit group

adversely impacting

  • the likelihood that users will contact MWStake regarding any issues with release distributions
  • the likelihood for MWStake to receive donations from the non-WMF users of MediaWiki

which can result in

  • the inability of MWStake to maintain its role in handling the distribution of MediaWiki releases
  • the inability for MWStake to support the non-WMF users of MediaWiki (It's mission)
  • the inability for non-WMF users of MediaWiki to benefit from what support MWStake is able to provide.

A simple, easy to implement solution would be for:

  • the MWStake logo and link are added to the footer of all future versions of MediaWiki software

Use case(s)

  • All users of non-WMF mediawiki wikis would have an appropriately visible and convenient logo to click on to learn about the MWStake group

Benefits:

  • WMF benefits by channeling questions, and comments regarding the distribution of MediaWiki to the organization responsible for the distribution of MediaWiki (MWStake)
  • MWStake benefits by increased visibility to non-WMF users of Mediawiki, increased interactions with non-WMF users of Mediawiki, and increased feedback on issues and bugs relating to MediaWiki release and distribution
  • The world benefits by an healthy relationship between two non-profits each fully aligned with their respective goals and values and each appropriately represented in the credits (the footer) of the thing that they have in common (MediaWIki)

This has not been decided yet, we should not add MWStake logos yet (not sure if we should if such a decision is made later, but definitely not before a decision)

LogoFunctions is about an extension unrelated to the request

I'm opposed to this. While i sympathize with MWStake wanting to increase its reach, MW should not be used for what is essentially advertising.

There are plenty of organizations and individuals who work together to create MediaWiki (if you did a count of orgs' patches/reviews, would MWStake be #1? obviously not. I doubt it would be #2 either), I think the appropriate place for this kind of recognition would be in the CREDITS file.

Only slightly related: There is (incomplete) organizations data about Wikimedia Gerrit on https://wikimedia.biterg.io/app/kibana#/dashboard/Gerrit based on folks listed in the "Submitters" panel. If more organizations should be listed, please file dedicated tasks under wikimedia.biterg.io including usernames. Thanks.

Even if we decide to transition the release of mediawiki to MWStake (and there is a massive "if" there), I would strongly oppose logo addition in the releases, on the ground that basically no contribution in the mw has come from MWStake (https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki/graphs/contributors)

We need to move away from the trope of only considering code commits to core as "contributions". There are plenty of ways to contribute to MediaWiki, whether it's filing and commenting on bugs, providing support on-wiki/IRC/Matrix, writing and updating docs, translating, working on extensions, evangelizing the use of MW over other wiki alternatives, organizing workshops, etc. etc. MWStake definitely contributes to MediaWiki within their own niche of things that they want to. That's cool and welcome and they should be recognized for that! I don't think all of those contributions merits the extra special recognition proposed here (especially when there's an even larger non-profit organization that contributes way more that does not have said recognition) outside of the way we typically credit the people who work on MediaWiki - in the aptly named CREDITS file.

Boldly declining per last comments.
